THE PRESENTATION OF CHRIST IN THE TEMPLE (Candlemas, transferred from 2 February)
Sunday, 30 January 2022
COLLECT
Almighty and ever-living God, clothed in majesty,
whose beloved Son was this day presented in the Temple,
in substance of our flesh:
grant that we may be presented to you
with pure and clean hearts,
by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

The sermon is followed by the intercessions.
Our Intercessor is Judie Thomson. These prayers are three minutes long.
The response to ‘Lord, in your mercy’ is: ‘Hear our prayer’.
And at the end ‘Merciful Father, accept these prayers, for the sake of your son, our saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Continue with the Lord’s Prayer after the intercessions:
‘Our Father …’
The prayers are followed by the anthem and the closing hymn (below).

Click here for the words for today’s hymns and anthem.
Opening hymn: ‘Hail to the Lord who comes … to his temple gate’ (three minutes long) by John Ellerton (1826 1893).
Second Hymn: ‘Hail to the Lord’s anointed’ (four minutes long) by James Montgomery (1771-1854).
Anthem
Our anthem this week (two minutes long) is a setting by Sir John Stainer (1840-1901) of the early (probably second century) Christian hymn Phos hilaron hagias doxes Athenogenes: ‘Hail, gladdening Light, of his pure glory poured’.
The music is performed by the Choral Scholars of St Martin’s in the Fields.
We are grateful to the performers for making this music, which is reproduced under licence, available free of charge.
